Make Your Own Alternative Coins

(Make metal coins from your kitchen table without expen-
sive coin presses and other expensive coin making equip-
ment. Put coins on jewelry to sell.)

Making your own alternative metal coins has been happening in the
USA, but most here in the US don’t know that in the mid-west some
states use alternative money to make purchases.

The largest of these alternative currencies is called “Berkshares”.
Berkshares are being used in Western Massachusettes in the Berk-
shares region according to USA Today. USA  Today reports that
Berkshares started being used in 2006 and has circulated $2.3 mil-
lion worth of Berkshares.

According to one report there are 150 alternative currencies being
used and accepted around the U.S., and most US citizens don’t
know that this is completely legal.

In Mid-Michigan alternative currencies are appearing unexpect-
edly according to an NBC news affiliate in Michigan. Supporters
of this alternative money says it’s a competing currency and not
counterfeit money. At the moment you can buy things or services
without using U.S. Treasury money, they say.

Organizations, people or privately owned businesses are not man-
dated by federal statute to accept US minted coins or printed pa-
per bills as payment for services and products according to the
Coinage Act of 1967. This information can be found on the U.S.
Treasury Department web site.
