US coins stamped with “COPY” somewhere on the coins
are legal.

The first US coins were minted in 1792. The face value
of the coin were $.01,$.05,$0.10,$0.25,$0.50 and $1.00.
Some of the collectible coins minted by the United States
mint are commemorative coins, Bullion, and the state
quarters. But the most collectible of the coins are those
coins no longer in circulation, such as the gold dollar
coin that was minted from 1849 to 1889 or the five dol-
lar gold coin which was minted from 1795 to 1929.

The US Silver Coin is also very popular with collec-
tors. Many of these coins are no longer in circulation.
One such coin was the silver dollar minted from 1794
to 1803. A need silver coin replaced it in 1804 and is
now one of the rarest coins world wide. Another sil-
ver coin minted from 1878 to 1921 is the Morgan dol-
lar, one of the most collected silver coins with the 1921
Morgans being the most collected.

Many collectors hope the Presidential Coins will
become popular. The US Mint plans on issueing
four new Presidential Dollar Coins each year un-
til 2016, excluding living presidents or presidents
who died less than two years earlier.

James Earle Fraser, who designed the Buffalo
Nickel, also called the Indian Head Nickel, was
minted from 1913 to 1938. This coin is collectible
because several minting mistakes were discovered
right after it was put into circulation. With normal
wear the words FIVE CENTS wore down easily.
It is not common to find a Buffalo Nickel in good
Condition. The Buffalo Nickel was issued to re-
place the liberty nickel which also became popu-
lar to collectors because of a minting mistake.
The coin contained the roman numeral V with-
out the word CENTS.
